World’s biggest cuckoo clock!

admin May 3rd, 2007

Yes you read it right… in the Black Forest, Germany, nearby the town of Triberg (that can be considered the home of the cuckoo clocks) there’s a man that made of his own house (typical bavarian style) a sort of giant cuckoo clock, so big that (listening to his own words) it is the biggest of the world…!

Indeed, as you can see looking at the picture below, it is very big!

orologio a cùcù

As always, the style is really wonderful…with red flowers hanging everywhere around the walls. We stood there waiting to see the big bird coming out from the door… :D

uccello enorme

and there it is! to be honest in the picture you can’t see it very well, and he was even making a crap sound. Yes, honestly it didn’t impress us very much, we started to laugh more than else!

Anyway… if you happen to travel nearby Triberg, might be worth a visit!

Natural Park of S.Alessio - Part I

ingresso oasi

The natural park of S.Alessio it’s specialized in the recovery of wild birds, founded in the year 1994 with the help of LIPU - Lega Italiana Protezione Uccelli

We decided to visit it during the month of March a few years ago. It is situated nearby the town of Pavia, following the directions from the official website should be fairly easy to find it. As soon as we arrived, we could admire the majesty of the entrance (photo above).

As you can see from those two photos, there aren’t only birds inside the natural park, but also other species of animals… more or less interesting and dangerous, depending on the point of views!

Anyway once you enter in the green zone, full of trees, it is really a funny situation: it’s almost a treasure hunt, trying to spot all the various birds on the trees’ branches.

This owl in the photo below for example (I think is an owl or something similar) was really well camouflaged, and I had to use my digital camera zoom to photograph it.

In the cages there were more particular and exotic birds like this tucano (I think) below:

tucano

this cute small white parrot instead was free to wander around at will… very funny also because he was talking to you, you could almost think he was trying to socialize with you!

papagallino bianco

… and lastly those two below, of color brown-red, that were always together like a couple:

The home of the cuckoo clock

orologio a cùcù ENORME!

It isn’t exactly Bavaria, but rather about a region called Schwarzwald, that in German means “Black Forest”. It isn’t really a touristy area, and it isn’t nearly as pretty as Bavaria, but it’s no less fascinating because of this.

A city that is particularly interesting to visit is Triberg, the hometown of the cuckoo clock! While walking around the main street you will find many stores that specialize in the sale of this peculiar souvenir… there’s a really attractive one that has an enormous cuckoo clock as the sign outside of the store. (look at the photo above)

In the end I gave in and even I bought a cuckoo clock, in a small size though! In 2003 I spent around 110 euros for a small but beautiful one. If you have more money to spend there are some really huge ones that cost more than 1.000 euros!!
