The small town of “Castel dell’Alpi” is located between Bologna and Florence, in the appennines, in the Comune of San Benedetto val di Sambro, counting about 4000 people.
It is an artificial lake, and it’s quite popular in the nearby area during the summer. It is possible to take short boat trips and do pic-nic on the fields nearby. It is easy to reach from Bologna, taking the highway and exiting in “Pian del Voglio”. We went there some years ago and was very crowded, hard even to find a parking place!
In the photo below you can see it, and in the distance the main bridge passing over it.

After 2 hours of walking, we reached a good spot. Still very distant from the waterfalls themselves, but at least we could admire them from distance already!

And they are really amazing… below a more detailed picture.

It seems that those waterfalls were famed already at Dante’s times. The “Supreme Poet” was so astonished hearing the powerful noise of the Acquacheta waterfalls that he compared it to the infernal river “Flegetonte” in his famous artwork “Divine Comedy”.

The way was continuing over the waterfalls, but having only one day at our disposal (and we didn’t started early), we decided to go back. Before departing from that wonderful place though, we discovered a really nice place just below the waterfall: a sort of giant pool with a real crystaline water, that was really inviting!

Judge for yourself… doesn’t it look like one of those typical tropical waterfall you can see in the jungles? those that often appear in movies or commercial spots? incredible, really.

The last picture, taken from below (the pool above)… the beeches’ lush green is really shining over the background, and you can almost feel better only looking at that picture. Really a place to visit, if you need to relax and stay away from the daily routine. Guaranteed!
If you have more time at your disposal, I suggest you go on and take a longer trip, since the Acquacheta Waterfalls are just a part of the huge National Park of Foreste Casentinesi , in which there’s plenty of neat places to visit !

We ran into this silly sign (put there by the owner of the house in his own yard) during one of our trips in Bavaria! It surely deserves the prize for the silliest/ funniest and at the same time most original sign that I have ever seen!
Going back to talk about the place in question, we went to go around Mittenwald (of which I may speak to you later on), a beautiful German country near the Austrian border. We went up a tortuous path that leads to a large, marvelous lake, the Lautersee, surrounded by mountains, with diverse green fields all around, as you can see in the photo below

Clearly you can also reach the lake by bus… but don’t you want to do a little healthy physical activity in a place where it’s still possible to breath pure air??
